Michelle Reyes

I’m Michelle Reyes. I began my journey in the tax world back in 2004 with H&R Block, where I started as a tax preparer. After a few years there, I joined Liberty Tax in 2011 where I progressed from a tax preparer to a senior tax preparer, and eventually became the office manager. But in 2014, I decided it was time for a new chapter – I left Liberty Tax to start my own tax office thanks to the help of my mother (Emma Reyes), brother (Michael Reyes), and husband (Regin Mayandoc).

Motivation for Starting My Own Business

My motivation to start my own business was simple: I wanted to help people. I saw many who couldn’t afford expensive tax services, and I wanted to change that. By offering more affordable tax preparation, I help my clients maximize their tax returns, which they can use for important things like paying bills, buying groceries, and supporting their families. This work gives me a sense of purpose and fulfillment, as I understand what it’s like to struggle without support.

Overcoming Challenges in Client Acquisition

Getting clients wasn’t easy at first. In my first year, I walked through my neighbourhood in winter, distributing flyers with my children. That year, I had just 10 clients, half of whom were family. But I didn’t give up. The next year, I sponsored local events, handed out business cards, and relied on word-of-mouth referrals. Now, many of those early clients are still with me.

I offer more than just tax services, like bookkeeping, because it allows me to assist more people in different ways. People choose my services because I’m affordable, reliable, knowledgeable, and available 24/7. I listen to and advise my clients, ensuring I’m always up to date with the latest tax updates.

The Journey of Running a Family Business

Running a family business was a conscious choice. It allows me to keep my prices low and offer flexible service to my clients. I’m not bound by a strict 9-5 schedule, which means I can be there for my clients outside regular office hours. Starting from scratch and building my business from the ground up was challenging, but it was important for me to establish a legacy of affordable service – I’ve kept my prices at $25 to honour this commitment. I also want my children to learn from my journey – the value of hard work, perseverance, and the rewards of achieving your goals.
